  • Notebook Entry #36 - Write about a time when you were really scared. Try to include descriptive details and dialogue. (Minimum 1 page.)
  • Notebook Entry #37 - Preview "Three Skeleton Key" - Lit Book, p. 48. Write two prediction sentences about the story.

Tuesday - 11/3

  • Read about Point of View in the Literature Book - pages 222- 223
  • Notebook Entry #38 - Divide a new notebook page into four squares. In each square draw a picture or icon to represent these four terms: point of view, first person point of view, third person limited point of view, and third person omniscient point of view. The drawings should help you to visualize and remember what each term means. Then label each sketch with the term and definition.
  • Read "Three Skeleton Key," Literature book - p. 49 to the middle of the first column on page 51.
  • Continue Notebook Entry #37 - Review what you've read so far and write down details that give information about the characters and the setting of the story.
    HW: Finish class work, if necessary.

  • Add to your notes about setting and characters in Notebook Entry #37.
  • Complete the top portion of your Story Map [PDF] and the most important events that have occured in the story so far.
    HW: Notebook Entry #39. Copy five descriptive sentences from the story "Three Skeleton Key" into your notebooks. Circle the adjectives in the sentences and underline the nouns.

  • Correct Adjectives WS - 2. Turn in.
  • Finish reading "Three Skeleton Key."
  • Finish Story Map.
  • Notebook Entry #40 - Answer the following questions about "Three Skeleton Key" using complete sentences.
    • 1. Describe three examples of foreshadowing that occur in the story.
    • 2. Choose one of the main characters and describe his reaction to the rats.
    • 3. Image you were at the lighthouse when these events occurred. How do you think you would have handled the situation and reacted?
  • Grammar Book - Do Exercise 9, p. 37 - 38. Follow the book directions (Period A does not have to do this assignment.)

    HW: Finish class work, if necessary. Notebook Entires #31 - 40 are due tomorrow.

  • Notebook Entry #41 - If you were given three wishes, what would you wish for? Make a three column chart. Label the columns with the following headings: The Wish, Possible Positive Consequences, Possible Negative Consequences. Write down your wish and the possible good and bad things that could happen as a result of making the wish. There are two wish-making rules you must follow. #1 - You can't wish for anything that would give you more wishes. #2 - You can't wish for unlimited anything.
    HW: Complete Identifying Pronouns WS - 1 [PDF].

  • Start reading "The Monkey's Paw." You can download a copy of the story here if you need to.--> [ DOC ]
  • Notebook Entry #43 - Responses to "The Monkey's Paw." Before you start reading, make three predictions about the story based on what you learned from the vocabulary worksheet. Then, as you read the story, stop and write down any questions you have about what is happening.
    HW: Grammar Book -
    • Exercise Review B, p. 38 - 39. Follow the book directions.
    • Exercise Review C, p. 40. Write out the sentences. Label the nouns (N), the adjectives (ADJ), and the pronouns (PRO) in the sentences.

  • NB #43 (continued) - Setting and Mood - Scan over the text on the last page of "The Monkey's Paw." Write at least ten words and phrases that the author uses to describe the setting and create a suspenseful mood at the end of the story. You can download a copy of the story here if you need to.--> [ DOC ]
  • Using your notes from Notebook Entry #41, write three paragraphs about your three wishes. Each paragraph should be indented and include a topic sentence and transitional words and phrases to connect ideas. Each paragraph should discuss the following:
    • What the wish is and why you chose it.
    • What the possible positive consequences would be.
    • What the possible negative consequences would be.

    HW: Finish class work. Wishes paragraphs due tomorrow.

Friday - 11/20

  • Revise Wish paragraphs. Turn in.
  • Notebook Entry #44 - Wishes & Consequences - Make a four column chart. Label the first column "Character" for the person who makes the wish. Label the second column "Wish" for the wish the character makes. Label column 3 "Positive Consequence" for the good things that happen as a result of the wish. Label column 4 "Negative Consequence" for the bad things that happen because of the wish. Complete the chart while watching the video.
  • Watch video version of "The Monkey's Paw." If you were absent, please copy a classmate's chart.
