    • Basic Situation: characters, setting, and conflict
    • Series of events
    • Climax
    • Resolution

    HW: Finish the plot outline, if necessary. Redo last week's Grammar Safari, if required.

  • Notebook Entry #29 - Summary of The Frog Prince, or Iron Henry . Use the plot outline for Notebook Entry #27 to write a summary for the story. Follow the steps outlined on the how to write a story summary handout you received last week. Follow these writing guidelines:
    • Use blue or black ink only.
    • Write on one side of the paper only.
    • Skip lines.
    • Leave a 1" inch margin along both edges of the page.

    HW: Grammar Book - Do Exercise B, page 343 - 344, #11 - 20. Write the sentences correctly. Three of the sentences are correct and do not need to be written.

Tuesday - 10/13

  • Fairy Tale Assignment [PDF]
  • Notebook Entry #30 - Fairy Tale Brainstorming Session - Write down a list of possible fairy tale ideas you might want to try. You should have at least five. Put a star next to the one you like the best.
  • Story Planning - On a piece of binder paper, create a plot outline for your story.
    • Create a Basic Situation: Who will be the characters? What will be the setting -- where and when will the story take place? What will be the main conflict or problem?
    • Create a plot outline with a series of no more than five events, climax, and resolution.

    HW: Finish your plot outline. First Quarter Independent Reading Logs are due tomorrow. Each book entry must have a parent signature.

  • Test Review . Here are the questions that will be on the test:
    • Write a declarative sentence that includes the title of a song.
    • Write an interrogative sentence that includes a poem, article or chapter title.
    • Write an exclamatory sentence that includes the title of a magazine.

    • Write a peice of dialogue that uses an introductory dialogue tag.
    • Write a peice of dialogue that uses an interrupting dialogue tag.
    • Write a peice of dialogue that uses a concluding dialogue tag.
    • Explain each of the three parts of a basic situation in a story.
    • Explain climax, resolution, and theme.
  • Turn in Independent Reading Logs.
  • Review and share fairy tale plot outlines.
  • Start writing the first draft of your fairy tale.
    HW: Notebook Entries #21 - 30 are due tomorrow. Review for tomorrow's test on sentence types, capitalization, and use of quotation marks.

  • Read "Characterization" in Lit.Book, p. 106 - 107.
  • Notebook Entry #31 - Character Traits Sort Activity - Make a two column chart. Label the left side Positive Character Traits. Label the right side Negative Character Traits. Sort your character trait words into two piles and write them on your paper. (For absent students, make a list of twenty words that would describe someone's personality; for example: happy, sad, friendly, etc.)
    HW: Grammar Book - Exercise 2, p. 26 - 27. Follow the book directions.

  • Notebook Entry #32 - Invent-a-Character Assignment. Do this if you were absent: Find the picture of some anonymous person in a magazine (don't pick someone you recognize.) Use your imagination to make up information about your character. Answer the questions below. If a question has ** behind it, answer using complete sentences.
    • 1. What is your character's first and last name?
    • 2. Describe what you character looks like.**
    • 3. Desribe where you character lives.**
    • 4. Describe an action you might see him/her doing.**
    • 5. Write two direct quotations of what you character might actually say.**
    • 6. Write two sentences that tell us what the character is thinking or feeling.**

  • Notebook Entry #34 - Partner Dialogue. You are going to write a dialogue between the character you created yesterday and another character in class. Write the basic situation at the top of your paper: setting (time and place) and conflict (problem the characters are having) and character (character names.)

    If you were absent, you need to write a dialogue/script between two characters. One of the characters will be the one you created from the picture in NB #32. The other character can be anyone you want. Decide on a basic situation for your scene. At the top of your paper write: the characters' first and last names, a setting where the conversation will take place, and a problem the two characters will discuss. Then create a script of the two characters talking back and forth. Write a minimum of five lines for each character.

Thursday - 10/22

  • Return and log-in fairy tales and other writing.
  • Correct homework. Turn in.
  • Character Description & Dialogue Writing Assignment - Using notebook entries #33 & #34. You are going to write a descrption of the character you invented for NB #33 and the dialogue you wrote for NB #34.
    • On binder paper start with a brief description of the setting of the conversation.
    • Next, write a detailed description of your character's appearance. You might want to start at the top and work your way down to the feet.
    • The description should lead into the character conversation that you wrote for NB #33. The conversation should include at least ten lines of dialogue (about five lines for each character) written in paragraph form. Remember to add descriptive dialogue tags, proper punctuation and capitalization.
    • Follow the Writing Guidelines: skip lines, blue/black ink, 1" margins, one side only
    • You can see two examples here.

    HW: Rewrite the Character Description & Dialogue Writing Assignment, if required -->
    • If you got a 16 - 20 - you're done! No homework!
    • If you got a 15, do the part you're missing. (optional)
    • If you got a RD, rewrite with corrections.
    • If you didn't do the assignment, DO IT!

  • Finish NB #35 - Inferences - After finishing the story, answer Interpretations questions 2 & 3 on page 13. All your responses must be written using complete sentences.
